What is Your Life Verse?

Focus: Spiritual Growth/Faith

Do you have a Bible verse that is particularly close to your heart? One that you aspire to live by and live up to?

One of my favorites is Jeremiah 17:7-8:

"But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.  They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit." (NIV)

I love this passage because it taps into some of my deepest values and topics I’m passionate about: self-care and soul care (planted by water=refreshed, nourished), living a vibrant life (her leaf does not wither), making a difference in the world and having a life of meaning (bearing good fruit) and growing closer to God (deeply rooted and trusting in the Lord).

Because Jeremiah 17:7-8 so perfectly resonates with what I hope to see happen in and through my life, I like think of it as my life verse.

As my life verse, it acts as

  • a target I’m aiming for. It gives me a vision of what I want to become.

  • a mirror. It reflects back to me some of my deepest values and the things God has made me passionate about. It reveals something of what God has called me to be and the aspects of Himself He wants me to share with the world.
  • a compass. It guides how I pray over my life.

  • a filter. As I make decisions, I can filter it through my verse by asking, “Is this action bringing me closer to my goal of being a well-watered tree? Will this action bear the kind of fruit I am called to produce?”

My life verse also

  • reminds me of who God is for me. He is my provider, my sustenance, and refresher.

  • encourages me when times get tough.

Finding Your Life Verse

If you don’t have a verse you consider a life verse but would like to, here are a few things to get you started.

First, just ask God to show what the key verses for your life, or for this season of your life.

Then, as you read the Bible, listen to sermons, or pray, pay attention to the verses that stir something deep within you. Your life verse or verses tap into something that’s core to who you are. They’re the verses you find yourself coming back to again and again.

You can also try asking yourself this: If I could choose one verse to be my mission statement or my life motto, what would it be?

What is your life verse? I would love to hear about it!

With love,
