God Is Sending You Love Notes. Have You Been Noticing?
/Not long ago, I was driving down the road on a bright winter day when movement on the shoulder ahead caught my eye. At first I thought it might be a fox. I slowed down to take a look and quickly realized that the animal was too big for a fox. Was it a dog…? As it trotted across the road, my heart jumped. I saw, to my shock, that it was a lynx!
I’m sure my eyes were bulging like a startled pug’s. I’ve never seen a wild lynx, and I had long been asking God to let me see one of these stealthy forest cats. What a happy answer to prayer!
Once it crossed the road, the lynx sat at the edge of the trees and gazed at me with calm but curious eyes. After a couple minutes, it disappeared into the woods.
I drove away from that encounter beaming like sun-dazzled snow. I knew God had prepared that lynx meeting just for me, and I’m sure He was looking down at me with a smile even more radiant than mine.
Have you ever experienced something so surprising, so special, and so specific to you that it leaves no doubt that God is thinking of you?
I like to think of these moments as little love notes from God, His personalized Valentine’s.
In their book Captivating John and Stasi Eldredge say that,
“Every song you love, every memory you cherish, every moment that has moved you to holy tears has been given to you from the One who has been pursuing you from your first breath in order to win your heart. God’s version of flowers and chocolates and candlelight dinners comes in the form of sunsets and falling stars, moonlight on lakes and cricket symphonies; warm wind, swaying trees, lush gardens, and fierce devotion.”
How true, how beautiful!
It’s through the things that delight our hearts that God speaks to us, romances us, and lets us know that He truly knows us.
It’s easy to feel lost in the sea of humanity. To think, Why would my desires matter to God? Doesn’t He have bigger things to deal with?
But the Psalms dispute this line of thinking, reassuring us that “The Lord gazes down upon mankind from heaven where he lives. He has made their hearts and closely watches everything they do” (33:15 TLB).
He is big enough to handle ALL the problems in the world and still romance you. He is attentive to every detail of our lives. He truly cares you and is intimately attuned to your heart.
What loves notes have you received from God lately?
If you think you haven’t gotten any, I want to encourage you to pause and reflect on the last few weeks or months. What caused you a moment of joy—even just a glimmer? Was it your child’s laughter? The purr of a cat? A song on the radio that seemed to be written just for you?
And keep your eyes open in the days ahead. Start paying attention to your heart. Notice what moves you. Notice what inspires you. Pay attention to those moments when you feel a little jolt of pleasure and receive them as love notes from a good God.
He made your heart, and He treasures you!
With love,
I want to hear from you!
