You Might Be Afraid to Leave Because of What You Could Lose…But What Is It Costing You to Stay?

Letting go of a job, volunteer role, relationship, or residence in a community can cost us something—it can cost us income, a sense of comfort or importance, a feeling of security or belonging…

Because of this, we sometimes hold onto things that God is prompting us to release. But instead of considering what we’ll lose if we leave, sometimes we need to take into account what it’s costing us to stay.

WHAT MY CAREER COST ME

This was the case for me when it came to my role as a professional counselor.

As I began to realize that my job was not a good fit for who God created me to be, one of the biggest things that made me question whether I was really supposed to leave it was the thought of all I’d invested into my career:

…The seven intense years of college…

…The countless hours honing my skills through continuing education…

…The relationships I’d built with my colleagues and clients…

And then of course there was my income. Leaving counseling meant letting go of a consistent paycheck.

I had put a lot into growing and developing my career and leaving it would come at a loss.

But holding on to my career was also costing me. It was draining my joy and sapping my energy, which impacted my marriage and held me back from following God’s call to write.

In the end, I realized the cost of staying outweighed the cost of moving on. I’m so thankful God shepherded me through that season of life because following His leading has led to more joy, fulfillment, and fruit in my life than ever before.

READY TO RELEASE?

How about you? Is there something you need to release?

Maybe, like me, you hesitate to let go because of all you’ve invested into that endeavor. But you might consider: What is it costing you to hold on? Peace? Joy? Energy that would be better applied to nurturing your family, caring for your health, or pursuing God-given goals?

Is it costing you quality time with God Himself, our ultimate purpose and the only thing that will truly fulfill us?

If so, I encourage you to count the cost of both letting go and holding on. Bring your cares and concerns before the Lord and trust that He will guide you into His good plans for you, all in His perfect timing.

As always, you are in my thoughts and prayers, and I’d love to hear from you! You can contact me here or through the comment section below!
