Hearing Pastors Say This Created So Much Fear in My Relationship With God

Have you ever heard a Christian leader/speaker say something like, “The last thing I wanted was to be a missionary (or pastor, etc.), so of course that’s what God called me to…” Then smile wryly and declare that “God sure has a funny sense of humor!”?
I heard this multiple times when I was growing up, and it always sounded to me as if they were saying God was going to call me to do something I wouldn’t like (like go to Africa).
In hindsight, I realize this may not be how it was meant. Maybe they thought they didn’t want to be a missionary or pastor, but it turned out they actually love it. I hope so, but I don’t know because they never explained whether that was the case or not.
Regardless of the intended meaning, this idea of God wanting me to do something I really didn’t want to do took root, and it created so much fear in my relationship with Him.
But here’s the truth: God is not a cosmic killjoy just waiting to assign us to tasks we loathe, and He doesn’t find amusement in making us suffer.
We were created for good work that brings us—and others—joy, and the longings of our heart are actually often the biggest clues to what He’s calling us to do.
Yes, God sometimes calls us to things we don’t expect or things we *think* we wouldn’t like, but He’s a good Father Who brings good surprises, and when we get past our fear or insecurity or whatever’s holding us back, we find fulfillment.
And yes, our callings will require sacrifice. Sweat and tears will probably be involved at some point. But it will be a sacrifice of joy. It will be work you want to lay yourself down for.
We don’t have to be afraid to draw near to God because He is good, and His plans for us are good!
