If You Feel Like You’ve Lost Touch With Your Purpose, This Can Help

A few days ago, I came across an article that showed images of several ancient structures before and after their modern-day excavation.

One set of images was of the Pyramid of the Sun in Mexico.

The first in this set was a lithograph from 1870 showing a hill with a trail zigzagging up the side. It was completely covered with vegetation—and apparently had been for around 1,000 years.

The next was a photo was of the same “hill,” but in this one, the trees and shrubs have been stripped away, revealing the 216-foot-tall, terraced pyramid underneath. Instead of a crude path, a massive 248-step staircase marches boldly up the middle of the main face.

PURPOSE OBSCURED

The focus of the article was on the effects of time, but it made me think about the process of discovering our personal purpose.

So often, like vines creeping over stones, the stuff of life—cultural messages, childhood trauma, our own ego and misconceptions about ourselves and our gifts—obscures the core of who we are and the people God intended us to be, sometimes to the point that our purpose is completely unrecognizable.

But here’s good news: If you feel like you’ve lost touch with the dreams, passions, and purpose God placed within you, the true you is still there beneath the detritus of life, and uncovering who you are and what God wants to reveal through you is often largely a matter of excavation.

And while that excavation might feel overwhelming to begin, you can learn a lot by simply asking questions such as:

  • What have I always been good at?

  • What was my favorite subject in school?

  • When I was a teenager and had free time (not planned or structured by a parent or teacher) what did I enjoy doing? (Or if considering yourself as a child, what did you pretend to do or be?)

  • If money wasn't an issue, what good work would I love to do?

What issues fire me up and bring up emotions such as anger, frustration, enthusiasm, joy, longing, etc.? What causes am I interested in supporting with my time, energy, and money?

BEAUTIFUL GIFTS

Now consider: What do your answers to the above questions reveal about who you are?

What clues might they be giving you to how God wants you to share his light and love with those around you?

You have beautiful gifts that the world needs, so please don’t let them stay buried!
