Has Life Put Your Goals on Hold?

Recently, I was reading AJ Harper’s book, Write a Must Read, and something she shared resonated with me.

After explaining how finishing her book took longer than expected due to a health issue, she said, “I learned…life happens, and when it keeps happening, it's okay to take longer than you planned to finish the thing. It's okay if it's a whole year longer than you'd planned. Or maybe close to two years. It's okay however long it takes [emphasis original].”

You may have noticed that I haven’t posted here in a while (I’m sorry—I’ve been missing you!), and the super short version of why is that a lot of “life” has been happening over in my corner.

Some of it’s good, some more difficult. But the result is that I haven’t been able to spend as much time on certain goals—particularly writing goals—that, while very important to me, have had to take a back seat while I focus on my family.

Maybe life has been happening to you too—you have a family member who needs extra support, your body needs to rest or recover from an illness, or the demands of work have overwhelmed your schedule.

If, as a result, you’ve been feeling discouraged about how life has been slowing, or even halting, progress on your goals, I just want to remind you that, to use Harper’s words, “It’s okay to take longer than you planned to finish the thing.”

As you navigate the needs of your current season, you might be able to continue to chip away at your goal in bits and pieces.

Despite the fullness of my life right now, I have managed to get little chunks of writing done on an important project. Even though progress is so slow it feels like I’m trying to fill a bathtub with a teaspoon, it adds up!

You also might need to take a complete break for a while. And that’s totally fine too!

The important thing is that, if it’s something you feel God planted in your heart, you don’t give up. Take the time you need to take care of yourself now, but come back to your goal at some point.

You are called, you are courageous, and with God, you can do this!

As always, you are in my thoughts and prayers, and I’d love to hear from you! You can contact me here or through the comment section below!
