What to Remember When You're Worried by Your Waiting

A few years ago, I bought my niece a watch for Christmas. While preparing to wrap the gift, I decided to set the time so it would be all ready for her to wear when she opened it.

As I went to spin the knob to adjust the hour hand, I glanced at my stovetop clock, and I realized the watch was already set to almost exactly the correct time—it was off by just a couple of minutes! Funny, what are the odds? I thought. Then, clearly in my spirit, I heard God say: “I’m right on time.”

It was just what I needed to hear. In a season of waiting on some specific promises from God, I felt frustrated and confused by His timing. I wavered between wishing things would happen faster and worrying they would never happen at all. But all that wishing and worrying was needless because, as God reminded me, He is always right on time.

How about you? Are you waiting on something specific to come to pass?

Maybe you’re hoping for a promotion or you’re ready for a change of scenery and are waiting for God to give you the green light to move to a new city. Maybe you’ve applied to a college or a technical program and are waiting to hear if you’ve been accepted. Maybe you’re waiting to close on the sale of a home, or maybe you’re waiting to find the person you’ll marry and spend the rest of your life with.

Whatever you might be waiting for, if you’re feeling worried about God’s timing, remember what the apostle Peter wrote: “The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent” (2 Peter 3:9 NLT). Even when God seems slow according to our human standards, we can trust that He has a plan and He is at work. He’s never late, and He will fulfill His plans and promises in His perfect time.

As we journey together in pursuing connection with God and the good work He has given us, let’s hold on to this truth!

In purpose and faith,
