The Sacredness of Your Secular Job

My friend Amber is a dental hygienist, and last month, I was blessed to be the recipient of her expertise. I’ve known Amber for years because we attend the same church, but my visit to the dentist’s office where she works was my first time being a patient in her dental chair.

I’ll be honest—I’m kind of a wimp when it comes to pain, and there’s this spot on one of my molars that’s a little sensitive. Most of the time, it doesn’t bother me—except when it’s being cleaned with the special tools dentists use. So I’ve started to dread going to the dentist. But to my great gratitude, Amber was so gentle that when she cleaned my teeth, I barely felt a thing.

I’m not sure I can say that I now look forward to going to the dentist, but knowing that Amber will be taking care of me next time I need my teeth to be cleaned makes me feel so much more peaceful and calm about it.

SACRED VERSUS SECULAR WORK

After my visit, I started thinking about how God’s grace moves through Amber. She is an ambassador of peace. I don’t think I’ve ever put those two phrases together before: dental hygienist and ambassador of peace. But in this case, it’s so fitting. Because of how she cared for me, I experienced God’s peace and I felt His care for me.

This experience reminded me how God’s grace and presence can flow through us no matter where we are or what we’re doing.

I think we have a tendency to divide activities into sacred and secular: Being a pastor, youth leader, missionary, etc. is sacred. Being a dental hygienist, mechanic, or vet is secular.

But that’s not how God sees it. Everything is sacred when it’s committed to Him—including our jobs. No matter your role or occupation, you have the sacred opportunity to impart God’s grace to those whom you encounter and who benefit from your work.

AMBASSADOR OF CHRIST

You are an ambassador of Christ who can impart love, joy, peace, wisdom, innovation, and more into everything you do. I hope you find that as exciting and encouraging as I do! I want to encourage you to take heart knowing that, as you seek Him and share Him, God is making a difference through the everyday things you do.

You are His masterpiece shining His light, love, and beauty in a dark and hurting world. God celebrates you, and I do too!

As always, you are in my thoughts and prayers, and I’d love to hear from you! You can contact me here or through the comment section below.
