Book Review: The Sacred Chase: Moving from Proximity to Intimacy with God by Heath Adamson

The subtitle of this book is what really grabbed my attention: trading proximity for intimacy.

I don’t just want to know God; I want to be intimately close to Him on a heart level, and I’m passionate about helping others develop that kind of closeness too. So I was pretty excited to read this book.

I really liked Adamson’s encouragement to run toward Jesus despite any sins, struggles, or fears we may have. One of the main stories he uses as an example of this is the story of the man possessed by a group of demons called Legion who approached Jesus in the country of the Gadarenes. I had never thought about the courage it probably took for this man to run toward Jesus rather than away from him, so I appreciated this perspective.

The book overall, however, turned out to be different than I expected. It felt kind of academic to me and felt more like a long explanation for why we don’t develop intimacy and why we should. There wasn’t much in the way of how to actually develop intimacy. I guess I expected more in the way of spiritual practices, and I thought he would share more about his own personal spiritual journey. He does share a few practices near the very end of the book, it just wasn’t the focus of the book the way I expected it to be.

I also had a hard time connecting to his writing style. It felt a little scattered in places, and I just didn’t connect to him as a writer or the stories he shared in the way I hoped to. But that could be just me. If you want to check it out for yourself, you can find it here. Even though I didn’t connect very well to the content, I am still passionate about and fully agree with the premise—we shouldn’t just know about Jesus, we should chase after Him and actively pursue intimacy with Him.

In love, purpose, and faith,
