Letting Go: Is It Time?

One of my favorite poems is  “Something Told the Wild Geese” by Rachel Fields.

In it, she reflects on how even as the leaves are still green on the trees and the summer sun is still shining bright, geese just seem to know that winter’s coming. Somehow, they know it’s time to go.

I love it for its beauty and celebration of the wisdom of wildlife. But I also love how it reminds me of the God-given instincts and intuition planted within our hearts. Sometimes we just know when it’s time to go, even if we can’t explain it.

Is it time to say goodbye to something in your life? Leaving can be hard because it can feel like losing—and sometimes it does come with a loss.

But so often what we let go of is vastly outweighed by what we gain when we open our hands in trust.

As we embrace our callings and move forward with courage, may we be like both the geese and the apostle Paul, who forged ahead “single-minded: Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead” (Philippians 3:13, NET).

As always, you are in my thoughts and prayers, and I’d love to hear from you! You can contact me here or through the comment section below!

Everyday joy…

Fall is our favorite season! The leaves are already mostly gone from the trees, but the days are still mild and we’re soaking in as much sunshine as we can before the snow flies!

Autumn glory from earlier in the fall. 🍁

What brought you joy this past month? I'd love to hear about it!

Words of wisdom…

I love this journaling prompt from Patti Fagan. 🤍May we act because we’re moved by the gentle prompting of the Holy Spirit rather than out of obligation or guilt.

Another good word, this one from Greg McKeown. Can I get an amen?!

A bit of beauty…

Something Told the Wild Geese” by Rachel Field

Something told the wild geese

It was time to go,

Though the fields lay golden

Something whispered, "snow."

Leaves were green and stirring,

Berries, luster-glossed,

But beneath warm feathers

Something cautioned, "frost."

All the sagging orchards

Steamed with amber spice,

But each wild breast stiffened

At remembered ice.

Something told the wild geese

It was time to fly,

Summer sun was on their wings,

Winter in their cry.
