I Couldn't Understand Why My Work Wasn’t Fulfilling—Until God Showed Me This Life-Changing Truth

For years, I immersed myself in my job as a professional counselor, doing work I knew was good, work that mattered and made a difference in people’s lives. Because I knew it was good work, I couldn’t understand why I didn’t find more enjoyment and fulfillment in it.

Finally, one day, while pouring out my heart to God with all my questions and struggles, I had an epiphany. God showed me how I had been trying to squeeze myself into a mold that didn’t quite fit. Yes, what I was doing was good, and it was important preparation for where I was headed. But it wasn’t the specific good He had created me for, and it wasn’t what He was calling me to.

I began to prayerfully reassess who I actually was—and let go of who I thought I should be. Through this process God revealed that the gift and desire for writing He’d put in me was there for a reason. It wasn’t up to me to decide whether it was “practical” or not. My job was to trust Him and move forward in the distinctive good work He had given me.

There’s a lot more to this story. But the short version is, discovering and embracing my God-given role launched me into an amazing adventure of joy, purpose, and increased intimacy with God, and the result has been completely life changing.

Breathe, Connect, Reflect

Maybe, like I was, what you’re doing with your life is good, but you feel like something is missing. You wonder why you don’t feel more fulfillment and joy. Maybe you’re questioning whether what you’re doing is really what you’re called to.

If that’s the case, perhaps it’s time to take an honest look at who you are—not who you think you should be (or who others want you to be). I invite you to take a deep breath, connect with your heart, and reflect.

Here are a few questions to get you started:

  • What did I really like doing as a kid?

  • What am I naturally good at?

  • What sparks a sense of life and joy in my heart?

  • If I could do anything, what would it be?

(I know this last one might seem cliché, but it is a really powerful question, probably one of the most important for tapping into the treasure God planted deep in your heart.)

Final Thought

You’re not here to do just any old good thing, but the specific good things God planned for you before you were born. Those good things are part of God’s plan for bringing you abundant life (John 10:10), and part of His plan for bringing life and joy to others through you.

If you're not experiencing joy and fulfillment in your daily life, I want to encourage you: Don't settle for less than God's best. He promises that if we seek, we will find. So keep seeking Him, and trust that He will reveal all you need for an abundant life.

With love,
