What Makes Your Heart Sing? What a Robin Can Teach Us About Our Callings

There seems to be this idea floating around that it doesn’t matter what our heart’s desires are—what matters is that we are doing “good” work, whether we enjoy it or not.

In response to that notion, I’d like to ask: Does it matter that a robin wants to sing? Does it matter that a beaver likes to build?

The things these animals naturally want to do are an outgrowth of what they were created to do.

It would be peculiar and sad if these lovely creatures refused to abide by their design. Imagine a robin who decided her beak was better used for digging holes than making music—what a waste it would be! What a loss of a gift that reveals God’s glory and brings joy to so many!

It might be a silly example, but we often neglect our gifts in a similar way. We decide it doesn’t matter what we want—as long as we’re doing something “practical” or “productive.”

But just like a robin, so often, those deep heart longings and inclinations are clues to what God has created us to do—they are the very things He wants to use to bring love and life and beauty to those around us. Ignoring what makes our hearts sing is just as tragic as a bird who buries her beak in the mud.

What longings are stirring in your heart? Could God be giving you a clue to what He’s calling you to do? If, after prayerful reflection, you find the answer is yes, I pray you find the courage to take the next step in expressing that infinitely precious gift He’s given you!

As always, you are in my thoughts and prayers, and I’d love to hear from you! You can contact me here or through the comment section below!
