When What You Want Is Exactly What You Need

Sometimes we want things we don’t really need—a new pair of earrings…a piece of apple pie…a random cute-but-nonessential fox sculpture from the Fred Meyer home department…

But sometimes what we want is exactly what we need.

When you want nothing more than to take an afternoon nap, maybe it’s because that’s exactly what your body needs to strengthen itself and carry on.

When your job is sucking your soul dry and you want to make a change, maybe it’s because your job is a poor fit for your gifts and personality and a career shift is exactly what your soul needs to flourish.

When you want to write or paint or sing, maybe it’s because that’s exactly what you were designed to do, kind of like how ducks love to swim and robins love to sing because that’s simply what they were designed to do.

We don’t always need what we want, but sometimes what we want is exactly what we need.

Whatever your wants, I encourage you to bring them to God and ask for His guidance in how to respond to them. He’s never upset by our expression of desire, and when we are in intentional communion with Him, we can trust that He will make clear whether what we want is something we should pursue or not.

As always, you are in my thoughts and prayers, and I’d love to hear from you! You can contact me here or through the comment section below!
