Book Review: I Am David by Pastor Jimmy Evans
/
Do you want to become the leader in your home, church, or community that God created you to be?
With his book I Am David, Pastor Jimmy Evans has created a great resource to help you do that. Drawing examples from the life of King David—of one of the greatest leaders of all time—he teaches ten lessons for growing in greatness and becoming all God created us to be, even in the midst of formidable challenges.
The overall tone of the book is very encouraging. Pastor Evans delves just as deeply into David’s mistakes as into his strengths. He points out that it’s not our mistakes that stop us from fulfilling God’s purpose in our lives, but how we respond to our mistakes. Do we turn to God and allow Him to provide healing, restoration, and guidance? Or do we turn from God and hide in guilt and disappointment? Turning to God and taking responsibility for our mistakes, as David did, is what leads to growth and success.
In addition to being encouraging, it’s very practical, giving the reader tools to use in their own life. Some of my favorite passages were on overcoming discouragement, the value of being a worshipper, and keeping a positive, God-oriented perspective regardless of the challenges we might face.
The only thing that could have made the book better would have been more personal stories illustrating how Evans experienced or learned these truths in his own life. It’s also a little long at 276 pages.
Overall, I found this to be a helpful book. It is probably the most in-depth look at David that I have personally read, and it holds valuable lessons. It’s one I’ll likely return to from time to time to fresh myself on these foundational principles for living the life God created us for.
