He Came to Give His Body and Blood: Remembering the Reason for Advent
/The Advent season has begun!
In preparation, last week I started decorating my house, and one of the first things I did was arrange my mini nativity set in the kitchen window.
A few days later when I was preparing communion for my husband and myself, I set the communion cups in front of the nativity.
I did so almost on a whim, but as I stood in my kitchen and I looked at them juxtaposed against the peaceful manger scene, I was suddenly overwhelmed with a mixture of gratitude and something bordering on grief as I was vividly reminded of why Jesus came.
He came to give His body and blood.
Every moment from the first moment of His life here among humankind was designed to culminate in the heart-rending moments of the cross.
On that first triumphant Christmas night, angels sang and shepherds rejoiced because the perfect sacrifice needed to make us righteous before God had arrived on planet Earth.
As innocent as a lamb and perfect as the purest dove, everything about Him was precious. And that pure, perfect, precious baby boy is why we can enjoy God’s goodness, grace, and peace today. By His wounds we are healed and by His stripes we are made whole.
In the hustle and bustle of Christmas, let’s do our best to keep in mind the reason for the season—and not just the beginning of the story in that humble manger, but the entire story of Jesus' life on Earth and what He accomplished for us.
What a wonderful, beautiful Savior we have!

...Is it time to say goodbye to something in your life? Leaving can be hard because it can feel like losing—and sometimes it does come with a loss.
But so often what we let go of is vastly outweighed by what we gain when we open our hands in trust...
