When It Feels Wrong To Rest

“You need to rest and de-stress. Sleep as much as possible. Take naps.”

My doctor’s words, though not what I unexpected, were oh so welcome.

I’d been struggling with fatigue for years, and, like an exhausted rubber band, I had lost my spring. Though I’d made valiant efforts to push through and push on, I knew something needed to change. After explaining why I felt so tired, my doctor recommended I eliminate all non-essential activities in order to allow my body to recover.

As excited as I was to dive into this cocoon of self-care the doctor was urging, I also felt a little uneasy. What about my goals and responsibilities? What will other people think? Will they think I’m lazy? Will they be offended if I skip their baby shower or birthday party?

Underneath all these concerns was an even deeper question: Is it okay to rest?

As Christians, I think we sometimes feel that to please God we must always be busy doing something. We know God wants us to comfort the hurting, share the gospel, and give to those in need. But we forget that He also calls us to rest.

In Matthew 11:28-29 (NIV), Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Every time I read those words my heart sighs in relief.

Over the last several years, I've learned rest is not a waste, but rather a precious gift of grace. One that is okay to accept. One that God rejoices to give.

Of course, as purposeful women, God has called us each to unique and specific good works. And we should do them! But stewarding our bodies and souls so we have the physical and emotional resources to give with excellence is also important.

As we relax in the arms of Jesus, we can trust Him to help us produce more fruit than we ever could through our own striving. I've certainly found this to be true in my own case, and I'm happy to report that my season of rest has resulted in a harvest of increased strength and energy.

This week, I’m praying that you will receive a fresh infusion of strength and all the rest you need to live vibrantly. And, as always, I’d love to hear your thoughts or questions in the comments below!

In purpose and faith,
